Exclusive: The honest, raw, cutting – Preston Ary

preston

Hailing from West Plains, Missouri Preston Ary has most recently been bit by the Music City bug. His intense, unforgettable voice combined with his talent as a songwriter is now making his mark on the Country Music scene.

Preston started his career at seventeen, playing in a local Christian band, all the while developing his very own style and sound. Within three short years, he had become the face of “Southern Edge”, a local Southern Rock band in West Plains and quickly became a local musical icon. Not only has Preston evolved through music techniques, learned from Nashville’s own Buzzy Orange, his move to Nashville is affording him the ability to work with the very best.

Direct from the heart, honest, raw, cutting – those are just a few of the responses you’ll receive when asking about Preston Ary and his music. You’ll hear a lot of influences in Preston’s music, including Brantley Gilbert, Tyler Farr, Guns N Roses, Lynyrd Skynyrd… and while Preston’s music style is more of a traditional country with a strong rock influence, don’t be fooled.

His music has a sound all it’s own.

And now, Nashville’s newest rising star, PRESTON ARY, has found his way to Cathy Lemmon at the Artist Development Network. “Preston is an excellent songwriter, one of the best Country songwriter’s I have come across in my 20 years in the music business“, says Cathy Lemmon. She added, “He has a unique voice. It’s a really cool, edgy, Rock, Country style that grows on you!’

Give a listen to a few of the songs written by Preston, produced by Kent Wells, all provided by the Artist Development Network!

Twist of Lemmon Music is pleased to announce the recent signing of the impressive and versatile songwriter, Steven Wilhelm. Under the terms of the contract, Steven has agreed to a co-publishing contract representing his two original songs, co-written by Rick Hadjuk, entitled “Do What Lovers Do” and “I Fell in Love with You”. Both songs were produced several years ago, with a full orchestra.

Steven hails from Indianapolis, Indiana and has an extraordinary songwriting career spanning over 52 years. “Steven’s songs are unlike anything we currently offer in our publishing catalog”, says Cathy Lemmon. She adds, “We are beyond excited to work alongside Steven… and look forward to pitching his Disney “type” songs to the film and television influencers”.

Most recently, Steven spent three days in Nashville, working with ADN’s professional songwriters which include Bill Diluigi, Scott Sanford, and Corey Lee Barker. In the time spent together, they collaborated on a few additional and noteworthy soundtrack quality songs that will be pitched to the film industry.

The Resurgence of Southern Rock… Thanks to Kris Bell!

Kris Bell Live Shot 5

I went to see Kris and his band perform live at THE REVELRY in Hendersonville, TN recently and it was a FANTASTIC show! They gave an A+ performance complete with non-stop energy and insane talent!!!

Kris Bell offers brazen guitar power, often leaving us all with our mouths agape. But it didn’t end there! Kris Bell then combined that southern rock grit with powerful, original songwriting. Finally, Kris and his band took all of that… packaged it up and delivered a soaring, intense performance that had everyone on their feet begging for more.

ADN Welcomes Sabrina Fallah!

Sabrina Fallah

Cathy Lemmon and the staff of the Artist Development Network is excited to be representing Canadian ROCK artist SABRINA FALLAH.

From Ottawa, Ontario, Canada comes a hot new rock artist, Sabrina Fallah. A natural on stage with her polished vocals to her guitar playing, this talented singer-songwriter has a powerful voice and a lot of personality. In her 20’s, Miss Fallah has already made a name for herself by performing wherever possible over the years. Some of Sabrina’s music influences include Green Day, Bon Jovi, and Billy Idol. You can hear a bit of each of her mentors in her original songs where their influences have become a part of her unique blend of style.

Sabrina is an amazing live performer and she keeps busy playing all over Canada. She has entertained audiences at various Ottawa Festivals including the SuperEx, Bluesfest, Westfest, Tulip, and the Fringe Festival (Open Bar Musical). Sabrina has also performed for the Grassroots Women’s Festival, Brockville Music and Dance Festival, Canada Day (Quebec and Ottawa), plus festivals in Toronto including the Youth Day, Kensington, Blackout Event (La Nuit Blanche), and Bloor Street. Venues include Maverick’s, Rainbow Bistro, Brass Monkey Bar & Billiard, Avant-Garde Bar, Chateau Lafayette, Lunenburg Pub & Bar, Duffy’s Tavern, The Hideout, The Central, Linsmore Tavern, Rockpile, Supermarket Restaurant & Bar, Clark Hall Pub (Queen’s University), Cocoa & Joe Café, The Hopper, Birchmount Tavern, and La Brass. The list goes on and on. Sabrina also performed at the Holetown Festival in Barbados and most recently at Nashville’s Commodore Bar and Grille. She’s been on many radio interviews and rocking it out everywhere she performs!

Her first self-titled EP of original songs was recorded in England by producer Stuart Epps, who has worked with major artists including Elton John, Led Zeppelin, and others. Songs from this EP are played on radio, particularly by Canadian, US, and European university, college, and online radio stations.

Most recently, we were privileged to work with Sabrina here in Nashville as we produced her 5 new songs. She had the opportunity to co-write with several songwriters and record brand new songs with veteran producer Kent Wells. This was Sabrina’s best work and Kent brought out her amazing vocal talent, along with excellent tracks on her commercially strong original songs, like her title track “KISS IS A KILLER”, which she co-wrote with one of our favorite Nashville songwriters, Bill Diluigi (who coincidentally is also originally from Canada)

You will find Sabrina’s songs fresh and catchy, fun to sing along with. Miss Fallah is ready for the next chapter in her music career, a wonderful record label that will help launch her music world-wide!

You’ll also enjoy one of Sabrina’s videos that was produced by Brian Harstine, a very talented young man who owns and operates LIQUID CRYSTAL PRODUCTIONS.

Writer’s Night

commodore

Nashville, TN offers one of the most unique and valuable experiences for aspiring songwriters as well as singers.

“Open Mic Writer’s Nights” are offered at many of the venues around town, giving artists and songwriters the opportunity to sing on stage in front of a live audience. It’s a wonderful way to measure how well the public receives their original songs, plus it’s great way to perform in front of new people, and to polish and perfect their stage presence, and vocal skills.

Recently, I invited a few artists to sing at my Artist Development Network (ADN) “Writer’s Round”. It was hosted by a sweet friend, Debi Champion at the COMMODORE GRILLE on West End in Nashville, at the Holiday Inn. The COMMODORE is a classy bar and restaurant, with really great food, reasonable prices, wonderful service, and it has a beautiful atmosphere. There are always a lot of people in the audience and they enjoy listening to great music while they are dining.

Each of my artists sang 3 original songs in our Artist Development writers in the round… Shannon Grace (originally from New Jersey) sang a couple of her Pop/Country songs as did artist Lauren Riley (from Arizona). Stephanie De Wolfe (from Oklahoma) sang traditional Country style material and Sabrina Fallah (from Canada) sang a few of her Rock songs.

It was a nice variety of music, and the audience truly enjoyed the show. Here are a few pictures I took from my not so good iphone.

How to Get Your Song on the Radio

If you want to make it in the music business then you’ve got to get a #1 hit on the radio… but how do you do that?

The good ol’ days of sending your song to the radio station are long gone, so if you want to get on the radio you need to work with a radio promoter.

Jerry Duncan is the most successful, reputable radio promoter I know.

Since 1982 he has helped nearly every major artist land #1 hits on the radio; 72 number 1 singles in all!

More importantly (for you) he has been instrumental on breaking new country artists like…

Jason Aldean “Hicktown”, “Why”
Tim McGraw “Indian Outlaw”, “Don’t Take the Girl”
Toby Keith “Should Have Been a Cowboy”
Josh Turner “Long Black Train”
Blake Shelton “Austin”, “Ol’ Red”, “The Baby”
Soggy Bottom Boys “Man of Constant Sorrow”
Trick Pony “Pour Me”, “On a Night Like This”, “Just What I Do”
Brad Paisley “He Didn’t Have to Be”, “Me Neither”
Alison Krauss “When You Say Nothing at All”
Billy Ray Cyrus “Achy Breaky Heart”
Martina McBride “My Baby Loves Me”, “Independence Day”
Florida Georgia Line “Cruise”
Kentucky Headhunters “Walk Softly On This Heart of Mine”, “Dumas Walker”

Listen in as Jerry and I discuss…

  • How to determine which song should end up on the radio
  • The easiest way to boost radio airplay
  • How live performance and radio airplay are connected
  • If music videos help radio airplay
  • Why the lifespan of a single by a new independent artist is longer than ever
  • Jerry’s advice for aspiring singers
  • Jerry’s predictions for the future of country music

Our artist Tim Hadler is climbing the charts with the help of Jerry Duncan – check out the video for his single Down By the Railroad Tracks:

Here are a few of Tim’s other original songs, sure to become hits as well…

It takes a team of dedicated and experience radio promoters to get an unsigned artist on the charts. A professional company like Jerry Duncan Promotions is not going to take just anybody’s songs. You must have the best quality production, expertly-crafted songs, and amazing vocal talent.

Submit your demo here and let us help you get ready for radio.

Peek Behind the Scenes with a Concert Tour Manager

I recently sat down with tour manager Ronnie Palmer to talk about what happens when the recording is all done and it’s time to hit the road.

Artists are not earning as much money from CD sales as they were in previous decades. Too many music lovers are stealing money from artists, songwriters, publishers, and record labels by not purchasing their music, and it has hurt the music industry more than people can imagine.

It’s  become necessary for artists to make their money on the road performing as much as possible. I learned a lot about the responsibilities of an effective tour manager by talking with Ronny Palmer.

Check out the interview and get some valuable tips on the importance of having a dependable tour manager to make your shows run smoothly!

Country Music Outside the USA

As the CEO of an artist development company and a publishing catalog it is my job to stay up on the latest trends in the music industry.

One of the places I go to stay up to date is BMI’s Music World.

The July 28th article Writing and Placing Songs Internationally is a “must read” for any singer or songwriter.

The whole article is great, but I paid special attention to the section Country Music Outside the USA,  because I am in Nashville and I work with so many country artists.

Did you know that people in Australia love American country music?

Here’s what the article says…

Few of these fans have ever heard a song by Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Jake Owen, Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, or the other artists who regularly top the U.S. Billboard country music charts. But all of the aforementioned artists [Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Willie Nelson] are on the current Australian country music album chart.

Another great part of this article is from the section titled Lyric Considerations for the International Market says…

When writing songs intended for artists outside the U.S., and when pitching existing catalog songs, it’s important to avoid lyrics that are applicable only to America. According to songwriter/publisher Bob Dellaposta (more than 2,500 songs recorded all over the world), “Lyrically, keep the subject matter universal… having a good time with friends, falling in love, falling out of love. Writing about our American soldiers or writing patriotic songs about the red white and blue isn’t going to fly.

This is so true!

A great example of this is my client Tiah Guillot, a country artist from Australia. She came to Nashville and we paired her with seasoned songwriter Joe Sins. Together they crafted Already Gone. Here’s what Joe has to say about the song…

“Already Gone” is a story that is told in every town in every corner of the world. It is happening to two young lovers at this very moment. Probably in your own neighborhood.  It may have happened to you. That is why Tiah insisted it be brought to life.

Listen to the song and watch the video and you’ll see what I mean. The only clue that this is an Australian artist is that they are driving on the “wrong” side of the road in the video.

If you are interested in writing with professional songwriters to create amazing songs like this then submit your demo to me, I’d love to hear it.

Veteran Performance Coach Reveals His #1 Live Performance Tip

Buzzy Orange began entertaining live audiences way back in 1964.

Since then he’s gone on to coach some of the biggest names in Nashville.

I recently sat down with Buzzy and asked him for his best tips on how to connect with live audiences.

Here’s what Buzzy revealed in our 9-minute interview…

  • His #1 live performance tip!
  • A simplie little vocal inflection trick that always captures the attention of the audience.
  • Why most aspiring performers fail.
  • How to position your body on stage for maximum impact.
  • Why you should mispronounce words (on purpose) when you sing.
